Good morning, everyone.
On behalf of Minling Jetsun Khandro Rinpoche, Minling Jetsun-la, and Mindrolling Lotus Garden, it is my deepest joy to welcome each and every one of you to the inauguration of Mindrol Gatsal, our newly completed temple.
To all our honored guests, members of the Sangha, friends from near and far, our Tibetan, Bhutanese, Nepali, and Himalayan communities, our local friends and neighbors, and everyone who has traveled great distances simply to celebrate together—welcome. Your presence here today is a cause of great joy and honor for us all.
Many of you know that the temple was consecrated and the Rabne was completed last year. We intentionally waited until this year to hold the inauguration because, according to the traditional Tibetan astrological calendar, last year was considered inauspicious for events such as an inaugural celebration.
Therefore, today we are not consecrating the temple—we are celebrating it. We are celebrating the kindness, generosity, vision, perseverance, and the extraordinary efforts of the many people whose dedication has brought this wonderful project to fruition.
As I stand here this morning, I cannot help but think back to the early days when this was simply an aspiration. We would stand on this land and imagine what it might one day become. At times, it was difficult to picture a temple standing here, filled with practitioners, practice, laughter, and the warmth of a gathering as beautiful as the one we see today.
Like every worthwhile undertaking, there were moments when the path seemed uncertain, and the challenges felt greater than our resources. Yet, little by little, through patience, determination, and the generosity of so many, this vision became a reality. Above all, we are here today through the profound blessings of Guru Rinpoche, Chögyal Terdag Lingpa, Kyabje Minling Trichen Dorje Chang Chenpo, and our great mother-protector, Kshetrapli. What once seemed only a distant dream has, step by step, fruitioned into the direct actualization of that vision.
Looking around today, one cannot help but feel a deep sense of gratitude for the extraordinary ways in which countless causes and conditions have come together. It is a gentle reminder that when people unite with a good heart and a shared purpose, wonderful things can indeed happen.
People often look at a beautiful temple and simply say, “What a wonderful building.”
But those who have actually built one usually smile, because they know that behind every stone, every beam, every wire, every permit, every unexpected challenge, every rainy day, every delayed delivery, and every budget meeting lies a story.
A temple is never built by one person; it is built by hundreds of hands and thousands of acts of kindness.
Today, we especially wish to acknowledge Britton Bosarge-la, whose dedication, patience, and unwavering commitment guided this project from aspiration to actualization. Britton-la has carried an enormous responsibility with remarkable generosity, perseverance, patience and quiet leadership and most certainly has many interesting stories to tell of this journey.
He has been wonderfully supported by Lisa Ryan, Alex Ryan, Dean Baker, Lama Roar, Steve Iverson and Zuzana Dankova, the Lotus Garden administration team and residents, the many volunteers of Mindrolling Lotus Garden, and the entire Mindrol Lekshey Sangha from Asia, the Americas and Europe.
We would also like to thank Aileen for her incredible hard work and dedicated care in arranging the acquisition of many beautiful moldings, cabinets, thrones, thangkas, and numerous sacred shrine objects and implements, brought all the way from skilled artisans in Asia. Her efforts have contributed immensely to bringing this sacred space to life. We also express our heartfelt appreciation to Wang Yi for his steadfast support of Aileen and her work.
Our deepest gratitude also goes to Rigala, Chönyid-la, and the monks and nuns of Mindrolling, whose prayers, blessings, guidance, and encouragement have accompanied this project from its very beginning.
We also wish to thank all those whose names may never appear on a plaque, but whose work is present in every corner of this temple—our builders, contractors, electricians, plumbers, engineers, architects, landscapers, painters, inspectors, suppliers, the bank that believed in this project, our local businesses, county officials, emergency services, and every skilled tradesperson who contributed their knowledge and hard work.
While each of you came with different skills, together you have built something far greater than a building. You have helped create a place where wisdom, compassion, and kindness may flourish for generations to come.
To our Sangha, words cannot adequately express our gratitude. Year after year you continue to support every project with your generosity, your volunteer spirit, your sincere practice, and your unwavering confidence in the Dharma.
This temple belongs to all of you because your aspirations, prayers, and merit are woven into every part of it.
Today, we are especially delighted to welcome Venerable Khentrul Marpa Rinpoche, senior khenpos, lopons and teachers of Mindrolling, and so many members of the Tibetan, Bhutanese, Nepalese, and Himalayan communities who now call the United States their home.
It gives us particular joy to welcome those who, many years ago, were monks at Mindrolling Monastery before life carried them to different parts of the world. Seeing you gathered here today feels very much like a family reunion.
Perhaps, when you were all at Mindrolling so many years ago, none of you imagined that one day you would gather again beneath the banner of Mindrolling—this time, however, in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
Such are the wonderful workings of merit and karma. The journey of our lineage has always been one of profound movement and resilience. The Mindrolling lineage first took birth and blossomed in the sacred Drachi Valley of Tibet. From there, it traveled across the Himalayas to find a home in the Doon Valley of the noble land of India. And now, that same unbroken stream of blessings has traveled across oceans to plant its roots here, in the Shenandoah Valley. It seems that we always find our home in a valley somewhere.
Who could have imagined that from the ancient valleys of Tibet, through India, the blessings of Mindrolling would one day blossom so vibrantly here in America? Outside of Tibet and India, this has become one of the largest communities connected with our lineage. This was not the result of a meticulously planned undertaking, but was most certainly the direct blessing of our root Guru, Kyabje Mindrolling Trichen Rinpoche.
Kyabje Trichen Dorje Chang himself when we asked him whether we should go ahead with it or not, (not having seen the land)- immediately said to Jetsun Khandro Rinpoche and Jetsunla, “You must not hesitate.”
Kyabje Rinpoche said – ‘This land, which is surrounded by mountain ranges like the petals of a lotus, will one day have a temple – that will arise upon the lotus’ anthers – and from that the light of the Buddha’s wisdom will radiate in all ten directions, bringing the flourishing of Orgyen Terdag Lingpa’s teachings and vision in a renewed and pure way. The name of the land should be Minling Pema Gatsal – Joyous Lotus Garden of Ripening and Liberation.
And truly, today, if you stand in the front courtyard of the temple, you will experience exactly what Kyabje Rinpoche foresaw: you will feel yourself seated upon the lotus anthers, nestled in the majestic beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountain range that surrounds this land like the petals of a lotus.
And so, since that momentous day on the Fourth of July in 2003, the blessings of the lineage have gently unfolded. The fruit of countless causes and conditions, and the aspirations of many great masters, have brought the flourishing and expansion of Mindrolling to this country.
It is a moment of profound tendrel that the acquisition of this land occurred on the very day we celebrate America’s birth. This auspicious coincidence is far more than just a historical date; rather, it marks a profound interweaving of the lineage’s enlightened intent with the vital energy of this land. Here, the absolute freedom of the Dharma finds a home in the heart of this nation. This convergence highlights a shared aspiration, mirroring the nation’s founding ideals of liberty and independence with the Dharma’s ultimate path toward liberation from suffering—planting the seeds for a genuine awakening to flourish here.
As many of you know, the Mindrolling lineage has always stood for profound learning, authentic practice, and the careful preservation of the teachings in their purest form.
Yet ripening and liberation are not only the purpose of monasteries—they are the purpose of our own lives. Each of us carries within us the seed of wisdom and compassion. Through learning, reflection, meditation, and acts of kindness, those qualities gradually ripen.
If this temple helps even one person become a little kinder, a little wiser, a little more compassionate, then it will truly be fulfilling the meaning of its name.
For more than three centuries, Mindrolling has nurtured great scholars, accomplished practitioners, artists, translators, ritual masters, and meditators who have enriched the Buddhist world. Today we pray that this same spirit continues to flourish here. Under the guidance and blessings of Minling Dungse Rinpoche and Minling Jetsün Rinpoche, may the precious Mindrolling lineage continue to grow, inspiring countless people through the authentic study, contemplation, and practice of the Buddhadharma.
May Mindrol Gatsal become a firm and lasting seat of Dharma in general, and in particular, a beacon for the Dharma in the West for generations to come.
Our aspirations, however, reach further than establishing a beautiful temple.
We hope that Mindrolling Lotus Garden will truly become what its name suggests—a garden. A garden is a place where people come to find peace, where friendships naturally grow, and where everyone, regardless of their background, beliefs, or circumstances, feels genuinely welcome.
It is our heartfelt wish that this will become a place where families gather, children laugh, neighbors become friends, and visitors can simply sit quietly and find a moment of stillness amidst the busyness of life.
Some will come seeking the Dharma, while others may simply come seeking peace. Whatever brings them here, we hope they leave carrying a little more kindness, a little more hope, and a renewed confidence in the goodness that exists within every human heart.
In a world that often feels divided and hurried, perhaps one of the greatest offerings we can make is simply to create a place where people can pause, breathe, and remember our shared humanity.
If Mindrolling Lotus Garden becomes such a refuge—a place of wisdom, compassion, friendship, and quiet joy—then it will truly be fulfilling the vision with which it was created.
And now, after so many years of planning, building, praying, hoping, fundraising, meetings, permits, and perhaps more cups of tea and coffee than anyone could ever count, it is finally time simply to celebrate.
Please make this a day of friendship, laughter, and happy memories. Take time to meet old friends and make new ones, walk around the gardens and beautiful surroundings, enjoy the wonderful food so lovingly prepared, and of course, help us do proper justice to the inauguration cake!
After all, every great temple deserves a great celebration, and every great celebration deserves a very good meal.

May the merit created through the building of Mindrol Gatsal, and through our gathering here today, become a cause for peace throughout the world, for the flourishing of the precious Buddhadharma, for the long lives of our sublime teachers, and for the happiness and well-being of all beings everywhere.
May all who come to this Joyous Lotus Garden, now and in generations to come, leave with lighter hearts, deeper wisdom, faith in basic goodness, and a renewed confidence in our fundamentally pure nature.
